Hear from Amazon & ISTA about how the frustration-free packaging program is changing e-commerce:

Amazon introduced the concept of frustration-free packaging (FFP) in 2007 to improve the customer unboxing experience while also reducing packaging size, cost and waste, and improving efficiencies at their fulfilment centres.

From 1st October 2019, all vendors and distributors who sell and fulfil items of a certain size and/or weight through Amazon must meet specific FFP standards to avoid £1.50/€1.70 charge-back fees that will be applied to every order.

Sealed Air is proud to be one of few APASS network members that can not only test packs for FFP certification, but also design FFP-compliant protective packaging and supply FFP-compliant materials.

Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging Certification

The certification program includes three tiers:

  • Frustration-Free Packaging (Tier 1)
  • Ships-In-Own-Container (SIOC) Packaging (Tier 2)
  • Prep-Free Packaging (Tier 3)

To maximise how much packaging can be reduced, Amazon is focusing on larger Amazon Standard Identification Numbers (ASINs) that tend to create a lot of packaging waste — that is, packages larger than 45.5 x 34 x 26.5cm and 12.3kg. Items that fall into those specifications must be certified under Tier 1 or Tier 2 to be exempt from Amazon’s £1.50/€1.70 per unit charge-back fee. This certification is given after testing has been completed at an APASS-qualified lab and submitted for approval. Hover over the image to learn more about FFP Tiers.
